Description
This auction is for a Vintage 1965 edition ofLIFE MAGAZINE
. Life was an American magazine published weekly from 1883 to 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 until 2000. During it's golden age from 1936 to 1972, Life was a wide-ranging weekly general interest magazine known for the quality of its photography. Life's coverage of the marches in Selma, Alabama began with this March 19, 1965 issue. The front cover displays a line of solemn marchers, two by two, led by
John Lewis
as helmeted troops look on. By the time this issue was published, the protesters had made two previous attempts to march. The first, on March 7th, later referred to as "Bloody Sunday", which ended with troopers attaching the marchers in a scene that was shown across the world. The second, two days later, ended in peaceful prayer, with Dr. King ordering the marchers to halt so as not to defy a pending restraining order. The March to Montgomery began on March 21, two days after this issue was published, and ended on March 25 at the Alabama State Capitol Building. This issue describes the convergence of nuns, students, and American of all races the following in week in Selma.
