MIRIAM HASKELL Frank Hess 1920-30's Brass Chains & Faux Amethysts Crystal Glass Bib
For your consideration, an early Miriam Haskell necklace designed by Frank Hess. It is a magnificent bib necklace. The piece is truly an exquisitely beautiful necklace to see and wear. The necklace is designed with faux Amethyst faceted conical shaped glass crystals, each of which dangles from the end of a length of gold gilt brass cable link chain. The crystals are accentuated by textured petal shaped gold gilt brass bead caps. The necklace fastens with a “racers spring” latch.
It is unsigned as most very early Haskell pieces are, however, the construction and finish of the piece is smooth and superb and has the distinct craftsmanship of Hess. The necklace is fairly substantial in weight. Approximate weight is 76.70 grams.
Dimensions:
16”L end to end; the dangles drape from the chain 3 ½” in the center front of the necklace and tapers gradually to 1 ¼” on both sides. The dangles span 10” of the necklace.
Please note that measurements are approximate and taken at the longest and widest points.
Notes on Condition:
This is pre-owned vintage designer jewelry which is in excess of 60 years old. It was purchased from a vintage shop in SOHO in the Village in the upper east side of Manhattan, New York while I was a student at Parsons School of Designs in 1980. Since then it has been part of my collection of vintage costume designer jewelry by Miriam Haskell. It has not been worn since being purchased, and it was cleaned before being put in storage. The amethyst crystals are well preserved. They have retained their beautiful rich colors. I have not noticed any cracks or chips on the tips of the crystals, but this is vintage jewelry, so It may have some small flaws which I have not noticed. Accordingly, please take a close look at the pictures and ask for more pictures if you want. I don’t mind. The gold gilt brass chain links are mostly clean with minor tarnish. The spring latch fastens securely, however, there is a small amount of patina and some tarnish on it. The brass petal bead caps have a warm Russian gold hue from being slightly tarnished, but it adds to the vintage charm of the piece. Structurally, well preserved and exceedingly beautiful. This piece will appreciate in value over the years if worn gently and carefully stored for posterity.
