Produced and directed by Robert Rossen, The Hustler stars Paul Newman as "Fast Eddie" Felson, a young, up-and-coming pool hustler who challenges Jackie Gleason's Minnesota Fats for the unofficial title of world's best straight pool player. Also on hand are George C. Scott (Bert Gordon), Piper Laurie (Sarah Packard), Myron McCormick (Charlie) and Murray Hamilton (Findley). The Hustler earned nine Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Newman), Best Supporting Actor (Gleason, Scott), Best Supporting Actress (Laurie), Best Screenplay, Best Black-and-White Art Direction-Set Decoration (won) and Best Black-and-White Cinematography (won).
